Engagement
Engagement is the total interactions a post earns (likes, comments, shares, saves), the raw count of how many people acted instead of just scrolling past.
What is engagement?
Engagement is the total number of interactions a post earns: likes, comments, shares, and saves added together. It's a raw count, not a percentage. If a post gets 300 likes, 40 comments, 25 shares, and 60 saves, its engagement is 425 actions.
Don't confuse it with engagement rate. Engagement is the raw number of interactions; engagement rate is that number divided by reach or followers, expressed as a percentage. Engagement tells you how much activity a post got; engagement rate tells you how that activity compares to your audience size.
Why engagement matters
Algorithms read engagement as a signal that content is worth showing to more people. A comment or a share carries more weight than a passive like, so a post with deep engagement (lots of saves and shares) often travels further than one with shallow engagement (only likes).
It's also the input for almost every other metric. Engagement rate, average interactions per post, and most "best post" rankings all start from this raw count.
What counts as engagement
- Likes and reactions: the lowest-effort signal, cheap to give and easy to inflate
- Comments: higher intent, since the viewer stopped to write something
- Shares and reposts: the strongest distribution signal, putting your post in front of someone else's audience
- Saves and bookmarks: a quiet but valuable signal that the content was worth keeping
- Clicks, profile visits, and story replies: counted as engagement on some networks, not others
Engagement vs reach
Reach tells you how many unique people saw the post; engagement tells you how many of them acted. Read the two together. High reach with low engagement means the post got distributed but didn't land. Low reach with high engagement means it hit hard with the few who saw it, often a sign worth a closer look or a paid boost.
