Save rate

Save rate is saves divided by reach or impressions, the share of viewers who bookmarked a post, a high-intent signal that ranks above likes for content quality.

What is save rate?

Save rate is the percentage of people who saw a post and saved (bookmarked) it, calculated as saves divided by reach or impressions. If 5,000 people saw a carousel and 250 saved it, the save rate is 5%. A like says "I noticed this." A save says "I want to come back to this," which is a much stronger signal of value.

Why save rate matters

Saves sit near the top of the intent ladder, above likes and usually above comments. Someone who saves a post is treating it as a reference: a recipe, a checklist, a tutorial, a quote to reuse. On Instagram in particular, saves feed the algorithm as a quality signal, which can extend a post's reach days after it goes live.

For creators selling templates, courses, or how-to content, save rate often predicts conversions better than any other surface metric.

Save rate vs other engagement signals

  • Save rate vs like rate: likes are cheap and impulsive; saves cost the viewer a deliberate action, so a high save rate on lower reach often beats a high like rate
  • Save rate vs engagement rate: engagement rate blends every interaction into one number; save rate isolates the intent signal that actually correlates with usefulness
  • Save rate vs share rate: saves are private ("this is useful to me"), shares are public ("this is useful to others"), and you want both

What makes content get saved

  • Reference value: lists, steps, frameworks, and cheat sheets that people want to find again
  • Density: carousels and infographics that pack more than one viewing can absorb
  • Specificity: "the 7 hashtags I rotate weekly" gets saved; "post consistently" does not
