Reel

A reel is a short, vertical, sound-on video on Instagram and Facebook, the format Meta pushes hardest in the feed and the fastest way to reach non-followers.

What is a reel?

A reel is a short vertical video, usually 15 to 90 seconds, designed to be watched full-screen with sound on. Reels live on Instagram and Facebook, where Meta gives them their own tab and surfaces them to people who don't follow you yet. The format is built for quick hooks, trending audio, captions, and fast cuts.

A reel is different from a story (which vanishes after 24 hours) and a carousel (swipeable slides). Reels are permanent, public, and built for discovery rather than your existing audience.

Why reels matter

Reels are the cheapest organic reach on Instagram and Facebook right now. Meta promotes them aggressively to compete with TikTok, so a single reel can land in front of thousands of non-followers while a static post mostly reaches people who already follow you. That makes reels the format to lead with when the goal is growth, not just maintenance.

They also reward consistency. The algorithm tests each reel on a small audience first, then expands distribution if early watch time and replays hold up.

What makes a good reel

  • A hook in the first second: people scroll fast, so the opening frame and first line have to stop the thumb
  • Sound on by design: trending audio and clear voiceover both lift distribution, since Meta tracks which audio is taking off
  • Captions baked in: many people watch muted, so on-screen text keeps them watching
  • A loop or payoff: reels that get rewatched (a satisfying ending, a "wait for it") earn more reach
  • Vertical, full-frame 9:16: anything letterboxed or repurposed from a landscape video reads as low-effort

How TryPost handles reels

You upload the vertical video, write the caption, and schedule the reel to Instagram and Facebook from one place. The per-network preview shows how the reel will crop and where the caption sits before it goes live, and the calendar keeps your reels on a steady cadence instead of posting in bursts.
