Handle

A handle is the @username that uniquely identifies an account on a social network, the name people tag, search, and type into a URL to find your profile.

What is a handle?

A handle is your account's @username: @trypost, @nasa, @yourname. It's the unique identifier a network uses to point at your profile. People tag it in posts, type it into search, and it usually forms the end of your profile URL (instagram.com/yourname). A handle is different from a display name: the display name is the friendly label you can change freely, while the handle is the fixed address everyone uses to find and mention you.

Why a consistent handle across networks matters

When the same handle works on every network, you become findable. Someone who discovers you on TikTok can guess your Instagram and X without searching, your business card and email signature point everywhere at once, and tagging you in a cross-posted photo just works. A scattered set of handles (@yourname here, @yourname_official there, @the.real.yourname somewhere else) costs you discovery and makes you look less legitimate.

How to claim and protect your handle

  • Check availability everywhere at once: before settling on a handle, confirm it's free across all the networks you might use
  • Register it even where you don't post yet: grab the handle now so nobody squats on it later
  • Avoid numbers and extra punctuation: @yourname beats @yourname_2024, which dates fast and is hard to say out loud
  • Keep it short and speakable: handles get read aloud in videos and typed on phones, so brevity wins

Handle and your link in bio

Your handle gets people to your profile, but most networks block clickable links inside posts, so the profile itself is where you convert that attention. That's the job of the link in bio: the single URL at the top of your profile that sends followers wherever you want them. A clean handle brings people to the door; the link in bio is what they walk through.
