Feed

A feed is the main scrolling stream of posts on a social network, ordered either chronologically (newest first) or by an algorithm that ranks what you see.

What is a feed?

A feed is the central scrolling stream you see when you open a social app: the continuous column of posts, photos, and videos from the accounts and topics a network decides to show you. It's the default surface where most content gets consumed, and how it's ordered (by time or by ranking) shapes who sees your posts and when.

Chronological vs algorithmic feeds

These are the two ways a feed can be ordered, and the difference matters for reach:

  • Chronological feed: posts appear newest first, in the order they were published. Everyone who follows you has a fair shot at seeing the post if they open the app soon after. Bluesky and some "Following" tabs still work this way
  • Algorithmic feed: an algorithm ranks posts by predicted interest instead of time, so a post from yesterday can outrank one from a minute ago. Instagram, TikTok, and the default X timeline all rank this way
  • Hybrid: many networks now offer both, a ranked "For You" feed and a separate chronological "Following" feed, and let users switch between them

Why the feed type matters

In a chronological feed, posting time is everything: publish when your audience is online or your post scrolls past unseen. In an algorithmic feed, timing still helps early engagement, but the algorithm can resurface a strong post hours or days later, so quality and watch time matter more than the exact minute you post. Knowing which feed type a network favors tells you whether to obsess over schedule or over content.

Feed vs discovery surfaces

Your feed mostly reaches people who already follow you. Discovery surfaces (TikTok's For You Page, Instagram's Explore Page) reach people who don't. A healthy account grows by performing in the feed (retaining existing followers) and breaking out onto discovery surfaces (reaching new ones).
