Direct Message (DM)

What is a direct message?

A direct message, or DM, is a private message you send to another account inside a social app: one-to-one, or to a small group. It lives in a separate inbox from the public feed, so only the people in the conversation can see it. Every major network has its own version (Instagram DMs, X DMs, TikTok messages, LinkedIn messages), and they all serve the same role: the private channel alongside your public posts.

Why DMs matter for creators and brands

Public posts build reach; DMs build relationships and close deals. A huge amount of real business happens in the inbox: a brand reaching out about a sponsorship, a follower asking where to buy something, a customer with a support question, a collaboration pitch between two creators. For many accounts, the DM is the actual conversion point, the place where attention from a post turns into a reply, a sale, or a partnership.

How DMs get used

• Sales and support: answering "is this in stock?" or "how do I get started?" turns interest into a customer
• Partnership and sponsorship outreach: most brand deals start with a cold or warm DM, not an email

DM etiquette and limits

• Don't lead with a pitch: a cold DM that opens with a hard sell usually gets ignored or reported as spam
• Respect rate limits: networks throttle or flag accounts that blast identical messages to many people
• Keep records of deals: agreements made in DMs are easy to lose, so save the important details elsewhere
• Mind the request folder: messages from people you don't follow often land in a separate requests inbox you have to check
