Call to action
A call to action (CTA) is the explicit prompt telling a viewer what to do next: save, follow, comment, or click. No CTA leaves engagement on the table.
What is a call to action?
A call to action (CTA) is the line that tells your viewer exactly what to do next: save this, follow for more, drop a comment, tap the link in bio. It's explicit on purpose. People who just watched your post will do what you ask far more often than they'll guess what you wanted, and a post with no CTA leaves the engagement on the table.
Why an explicit CTA works
The viewer is already at the end of your post. They're warm. But they won't act on a vague intention. "Hope you found this useful" prompts nothing; "Save this so you don't lose it" gives them a clear, low-effort thing to do, so more of them do it. And the action you ask for shapes the result: asking for saves and comments feeds the algorithm signals that get the post pushed further, while asking for a click sends traffic somewhere you actually own.
Types of CTA, ranked by ask
- Lowest friction: like, save, follow, "double-tap if you agree"
- Medium: comment a word, answer a question, tag a friend, share to a story
- Higher: tap the link in bio, sign up, buy, book a call
- Soft: "which one are you?" or "tell me I'm wrong" that pulls a reply without feeling like a demand
How to write a CTA that lands
- One ask per post: stacking "like, comment, save, share, and follow" gets you none of them
- Match the ask to the goal: awareness wants saves and shares; conversion wants the link
- Make it specific: "comment your biggest blocker" beats "let me know what you think"
- Place it where they'll see it: end of the caption, last frame of the video, or both
- Route clicks through link in bio: since most networks block links in captions, send people to your bio link and keep it current
A good CTA is not pushy, it's a clear next step you owe the reader after earning their attention with the hook and the caption.
